Surface Flipping and Triangle Winding
Use this tool before exporting the model to use in virtual reality software.
For faster backface culling in VR, connected surfaces in the mesh face need to face the same way, usually with front-facing normals. This saves processing time because the backs of surfaces don't need to be displayed.
The Surface Flipping tool lets you select one or more surfaces to flip, so you can optimize the model for in VR.
-
Display the model.
-
Click Surface Flipping Tool
.
-
You see the model. Back-facing surfaces are blue.
-
Select surfaces to flip using Ctrl+Click or drag select. Selected surfaces are pink.
-
Choose what to flip:
-
Flip Selected: only the currently selected surfaces will be flipped.
-
Flip Selected & Connected: currently selected surfaces will be flipped and all the surfaces connected to them.
-
Whichever you select, if Only Select Back Facing Surfaces is checked, you won't accidentally flip any surfaces that are already front-facing.
-
Optionally select and flip more surfaces.
-
When finished, Click Surface Flipping Tool
to stop clipping, and then File > Save All.
